Activity 3: Analysis of Letter by Soh Fan (19)

Pathos:

The writer had stated that he was impressed with the Congressman past voting record, and “hoping he will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of his state”. This shows that he was trying to convince the Congressman to see and approve whatever he has to appeal later in the letter by making him feel good. The writer also stated that the gun had fell into the hand of his child by mistake, thus asking the Congressman if he wanted to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more incident occur. This actually is a rhetorical question that is trying to say support gun control legislation or more people will be killed, which the congressman would have to take responsibility. Finally, he stated their rights as citizens of the United states, especially the rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, and this was implying that they have the rights to all these and citizens able to buy guns would obstruct the welfare of US citizens.

Logos:

The writer had included some statistics, such as “According to estimates, firearm attacks injured another 70,000 victims, some of whom were left permanently disabled.” This support the writer’s appeal by showing having guns will lead to other peoples’ death, which make sense too. Thus by having gun control legislation it will ensure less deaths, no matter child or adult.

Ethos:

“With credibility comes success”. Thats what the writer probably thinks too, thus adding statistics that comes from F.B.I, doctors and medical journals, which are all known and able to be relied on. This gives the writer report more of “ethos”, with his information able to be relied on.
