Activity 3: Analysis of Letter by Lim Zhi Qi (04)

The author used ethos in mentioning that his own son was killed by another gun which was not his, therefore, he has the right to support gun control. He also used ethos in his first sentence “I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state.” implying that the congressman has a lot of authority and would use them correctly.
The author used pathos by using the emotional appeal of losing a kin due to the lack of gun control and he also used pathos in “Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur?” to make the congressman feel the guilt.
The author used logos in giving the data of how many people were killed or injured due to guns, such as “Did you know that, according to the F.B.I., approximately 60 percent of all murder victims in the United States in 1994 (about 16,000 people) were killed with firearms? According to estimates, firearm attacks injured another 70,000 victims, some of whom were left permanently disabled.” This is only 1 example and there are more in the letter.
