Reflection No. 1 — Soh Fan

1. Based on your understanding of facts and opinions, why do you think this is important for a journalist/ reporter in the world of online news reporting?

When using facts and opinions in the world of online news reporting, there are some advantages and disadvantages.
In news article, the content are mostly facts, and seldom there are opinion, unless quoting a dialogue from a person that was being interviewed. When posting news article online, the news reporter must give facts to act as an evidence. Opinions can only be found in dialogues. Opinions are to give the audience different views of an incident, or any interesting things that had happened, as different person of different career and age have different perspective of views on different things.

2. How can some of the problems raised in the articles be controlled?
There can be a person who oversees all the news and corroborate it with his/her source so as to ensure the accuracy of the news that are being posted online onto the website. The content and linked websites in the website must also be monitored regularly by someone to ensure that they are not misleading or inaccurate in anyway.

3. What are some responsibilities of discerning readers?

If they happen to archive any of the news article and found out that it is misleading or inaccurate in any way, they should not pass it on to others readers. If they happen to do that after they found out that is is inaccurate, they should warn the person they had passed on to.They should also inform the editor of the news to tell them about the misleading news and ask them to try to change it. Readers should also try to corroborate and triangulate the news they had read with other website that has the same incident or news. Discerning readers should try to differentiate between untrue stories and reality based on their own knowledge.
